Commute Cost Calculator

Your commute cost = fuel cost (based on distance, MPG, and fuel price) + parking + tolls, multiplied by commute days per week. Work-from-home days reduce your weekly total.

How much does your commute actually cost? Most people only think about fuel, but parking, tolls, and congestion charges add up. This calculator gives you the true daily, weekly, monthly, and annual cost of commuting by car.

You can also compare against public transport and see how much working from home days save you.

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates your commute cost based on distance, fuel economy, fuel price, parking, and tolls. It breaks costs down by day, week, month, and year. Optional: compare against public transport and account for work-from-home days.

Who it is for

Commuters wanting to understand the real cost of driving to work, anyone comparing driving vs public transport, people negotiating remote working arrangements, and hybrid workers estimating savings.

How to use it

Enter your one-way commute distance in miles, how many days you commute, your car’s fuel economy (MPG), and current fuel price. Add parking and toll costs if applicable. Optionally enter a public transport daily cost to compare, or work-from-home days to see the saving.

How the calculation works

Fuel cost per mile = (4.546 litres per gallon ÷ MPG) × fuel price per litre. Daily cost = round trip miles × fuel cost per mile + parking + tolls. Weekly, monthly (weekly × 4.33), and annual (weekly × 52) totals are derived from the daily cost and commute days.

Worked example

15 miles one-way, 35 MPG, 145p/litre fuel, £5/day parking, 5 days/week: Daily fuel = 30 miles × 18.8p/mile = £5.65. Daily total = £10.65. Weekly = £53.25, monthly = £230.58, annual = £2,769. With 2 WFH days, annual drops to £1,661 — saving £1,108/year.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Fuel economy (MPG) is an average — urban driving typically uses more fuel
  • Does not include vehicle depreciation, insurance, MOT, or servicing costs
  • Monthly estimate uses 4.33 weeks per month (52 ÷ 12)
  • Parking and toll costs are assumed to apply on every commute day
  • Public transport comparison uses a simple daily rate multiplied by commute days

Frequently asked questions

How much does my commute cost per month?

It depends on distance, fuel economy, fuel price, and extras like parking. Use this calculator to get a personalised estimate based on your actual commute details.

How do I calculate commuting costs by car?

Work out fuel cost per mile (fuel price ÷ MPG adjusted for litres), multiply by round-trip distance, add parking and tolls. Scale up for your weekly, monthly, and annual costs.

How much can hybrid working save me?

Each day working from home saves your full daily commute cost. For a 30-mile round trip at 35 MPG with £5 parking, that’s roughly £10-11/day, or £2,700+ per year if you switch from 5 to 0 commute days.
