What makes up your commute cost?
The true cost of commuting by car includes more than just fuel:
- Fuel — the biggest variable cost, based on distance, MPG, and fuel price
- Parking — workplace or station parking fees
- Tolls and congestion charges — London congestion charge is £15/day
- Wear and tear — not included in simple calculations but adds up
How to calculate fuel cost
Fuel cost per mile = (4.546 litres per gallon ÷ your MPG) × fuel price per litre
For a 30-mile round trip at 35 MPG and 145p/litre: cost = 30 × 0.188 = £5.65/day.
How hybrid working changes commuting cost
Working from home even 2 days per week can cut commuting costs by 40%. For someone spending £50/week on commuting, that’s a saving of £1,040/year.
Is driving or public transport cheaper?
It depends on distance and parking costs. For short urban commutes with expensive parking, public transport is often cheaper. For longer suburban or rural commutes, driving may win — especially if you car-share.
