What this calculator does
This calculator estimates Amazon UK seller fees including referral fees, closing fees, and FBA fulfilment fees. It shows your net revenue, profit per unit, and effective margin after all costs. A target-profit mode calculates the selling price needed for a desired profit.
Who it is for
Amazon UK sellers, people considering selling on Amazon, ecommerce businesses comparing marketplace profitability, and anyone sourcing products who needs to understand if a product is worth selling.
How to use it
Enter your sale price, cost of goods, and choose FBA or FBM fulfilment. The referral fee defaults to 15.3% (Amazon UK general rate) but you can adjust for your category. Add packaging, shipping, and advertising costs for a complete picture.
How the calculation works
Referral fee = sale price (ex-VAT) × referral rate %. FBA fulfilment fee uses Amazon’s base rate. Total Amazon fees = referral + closing + fulfilment. Profit = net revenue – product costs – advertising. Target price = (desired profit + all costs + fixed fees) ÷ (1 – referral rate).
Worked example
Sale price £24.99, FBA, 15.3% referral, cost of goods £5, packaging £0.50: Referral fee = £3.82. Closing fee = £0.25. FBA fee = £3.25. Total Amazon fees = £7.32. Net revenue = £17.67. Profit = £17.67 – £5.50 = £12.17 per unit (48.7% margin).
Assumptions and limitations
- Referral fee default of 15.3% covers most categories but varies from 7% to 45%
- FBA base fee of £3.25 is approximate — actual fees depend on item size and weight
- Closing fee of £0.25 per unit is the standard rate
- Does not include monthly FBA storage fees
- Professional seller subscription (£25/month) not included in per-unit calculations
- Always verify current fees in Amazon Seller Central
Frequently asked questions
How much does Amazon take per sale?
Total Amazon fees are typically 18–25% of the selling price for FBA sellers, depending on category and item size. The main components are the referral fee (8–15%), fulfilment fee (£3+), and closing fee (£0.25).
Is FBA or FBM cheaper?
FBM avoids Amazon’s fulfilment fees but you handle storage and shipping yourself. For small, lightweight items, FBM can be cheaper. For larger items or high volumes, FBA is often more cost-effective and gives you the Prime badge.
What referral fee rate should I use?
The default 15.3% covers most categories. Electronics is typically 7%, clothing 15%, beauty 15%, books 15%, and jewellery 20%. Check Amazon Seller Central for your exact category rate.
What selling price do I need to make a profit?
Use the target-profit mode: enter your desired profit per unit and the calculator will tell you the minimum selling price needed to cover all Amazon fees and product costs.
