Do you need to count calories on Mounjaro?
Calorie counting is not required on Mounjaro. The medication reduces appetite naturally, and many people eat significantly less without actively tracking. However, understanding your approximate calorie needs can help you:
- Ensure you are eating enough to get adequate nutrition
- Avoid going too low, which can cause fatigue and muscle loss
- Make informed food choices when appetite is limited
How calories are calculated
Your body burns a baseline number of calories just to function (your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR). The most widely used formula is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which accounts for your weight, height, age, and sex.
Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) = BMR × an activity multiplier. This is your maintenance calorie level — what you need to eat to stay the same weight.
Safe deficit ranges
| Deficit level | % below maintenance | Pace |
|---|---|---|
| Slower / steadier | ~15% | Easier to sustain long-term |
| Moderate | ~20% | Good balance of pace and sustainability |
| Faster | ~30% | More aggressive — harder to maintain |
Most health bodies recommend not going below 1,200 kcal/day for women or 1,500 kcal/day for men without medical supervision.
