Student Loan Repayment Calculator

Student loan repayments are 9% of earnings above your plan's threshold. On Plan 2, that is 9% of everything you earn above £28,470.

Once you are working and earning above a certain threshold, student loan repayments are automatically deducted from your pay. How much you repay depends on your salary and which repayment plan you are on.

Use this calculator to see exactly how much will come out of your pay each month.

What this calculator does

This calculator shows your monthly and annual student loan repayment based on your salary and loan plan type. It factors in pension salary sacrifice which can reduce your repayable income.

Who it is for

Graduates who want to understand their student loan repayments, employees checking their payslip deductions, or anyone planning their finances and wanting to know the impact of student loan repayments on their take-home pay.

How to use it

Enter your salary (annual, monthly, or weekly), select your loan plan type, add any pension salary sacrifice percentage, and click 'See My Result' for a detailed breakdown.

How the calculation works

Student loan repayments are calculated as a percentage of your earnings above the relevant plan threshold. The percentage is 9% for Plans 1, 2, 4, and 5, and 6% for postgraduate loans. Pension salary sacrifice is deducted from your salary before calculating the repayment.

Worked example

On a £35,000 salary with Plan 2: Threshold = £28,470. Amount above threshold = £6,530. Annual repayment = £6,530 × 9% = £588. Monthly repayment = £49.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Uses 2025/26 thresholds and rates
  • Assumes earnings are consistent throughout the year
  • Does not account for voluntary overpayments
  • Repayments are calculated before tax but after pension salary sacrifice
  • If you have multiple loan plans, repayments for each are calculated separately
